This test is, by default, bidirectional, meaning it will find intersections in both the outward direction and the inward direction. Inward intersections correspond to measures of thickness (the rays pass through the &quot;inside&quot; of the surface) while the outward intersections correspond to pore size measurements (the rays pass through the empty pore space and find the next intersection with the object).">

Smoothing a mesh can serve two purposes - the first is to smooth the geometry, rounding out sharp features; the second is to redistribute nodes, often in pursuit of improved element quality. When attempting to improve element quality, often the goal is to redistribute the nodes while having a minimal effect on the geometry. Different smoothing methods have different effects on the geometry.">
